Best time for Pregnancy photos

The most commnly asked question that I get, is ‘When is the best time for pregnancy photos?’ There can be many answers to this question depending on a few factors that need to be taken into consideration.

The first factor is whether this is your first, second, third or fourth pregnancy. Typically when you are expecting your first baby, your body is new to all of the changes and so your baby bump may not begin to protrude as early as you would think. I remember when I was pregnant with my first son, that by 20 weeks I started to get a tiny little bump but it wasn’t until I was 32 weeks along that I really started to look pregnant.

So if you are expecting your first baby I would recommend scheduling your maternity photoshoot when you are between 32 – 35 weeks along to ensure you have that perfectly round baby bump. If you are expecting your second or even third baby, your body responds quicker and so you may show a earlier than you did the first time around. With subsequent pregnancies I would recommend booking the pregnancy shoot a little earlier such as around 29-31 weeks along. At this stage along, you should still be relatively comfortable and can pick up your toddler easily, which will help in the session.

The next factor is, what is you are expecting twins? If you are blessed with carrying two babies, ideally the maternity shoot should happen during the 6th month along or between 25 – 29 weeks depending on how big your belly actually is.

The last factor is based on how you are feeling and if you have a high risk pregnancy. If you have been put on bed rest or at risk of giving birth prematurely, then it’s best to schedule your pregnancy photoshoot earlier rather than later. If you are showing a nice round belly around 27-30 weeks along then that would be a good time to do the photoshoot.

When is it too late to book a maternity photography session? Technically it’s never too late, unless you are in labour about to give birth (which has never happened to me by the way lol). But the further along you are the more uncomfortable and tired you might be, which makes it harder to hold poses and be in front of the camera for 1-2 hours. If you are feeling great and have no swelling, then you can schedule the session as far along at 38 weeks of pregnancy if you missed the ideal window. Always contact your photographer to check though.
